College of Surgeons Museum

The College of Surgeons Museum was established in 2006, and officially opened by the then President, Dr Russell Stitz, on 21 February 2007.

The Museum is located on the lower ground floor, south wing of the Melbourne building.  It is open to the public during the hours of 10am to 5pm Monday to Thursday.  Group tours can be organised by arrangement with the Curator.

On display in the Museum are surgical instruments, objects from the history of plastic and reconstructive surgery, historic books, College memorabilia and a selection of gifts from Fellows and affiliated Colleges.  Themes explored in the Museum include significant surgical instruments, historic events in the history of surgery, and the history of surgery in the Asia-Pacific region since the arrival of Europeans.

The Museum has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office for participation in the Australian government’s Cultural Gifts Program.  The Cultural Gifts Program is a philanthropic program managed by the Australian Government (Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts). Its primary aim is to encourage a culture of giving by offering taxation incentives to those who donate to approved public institutions.

The College welcomes donations of all kinds of art works, historic medical books and surgical instruments, which can be gifted through the Foundation for Surgery.
