International Medical Graduates

Assessment of International Medical Graduates (IMG) fall into two categories:

  • IMGs who wish to practise as an independent specialist
  • IMGs who wish to work in a position designated as an Area of Need (AoN). For more information refer to the guide on AoN (pdf) available on the Australian Medical Council (AMC) website

Access detailed information about specialist and Area of Need (AoN) assessments.

Following an assessment of the requisite documentation and an interview, an International Medical Graduate (IMG) may be advised that it is not necessary to undertake further formal surgical training. Instead, the interview panel may recommend that the doctor undergo a designated period of assessment of their clinical practice under supervision/oversight.

Detailed information about assessment under supervision/oversight is available.

Fees

As of 1 January 2007, applicants for a specialist assessment and/or Area of Need (AoN) assessment will be charged for an initial assessment, which consists of a documentation-based assessment and a face to face semi-structured interview. This is known as an Initial Assessment Fee.

Following a document based assessment if the applicant is considered not comparable an interview is not required and the interview component of the fee will be reimbursed to the applicant. If following a document based assessment the applicant is deemed to be partially comparable or substantially comparable to an Australasian trained surgeon, the applicant will be required to attend interview to finalise their assessment.

Following the interview, an international medical graduate may be recommended to undertake a period of clinical assessment under supervision/oversight.

If an international medical graduate has been assessed and advised to undertake a designated period of clinical assessment of their professional practice with supervision/oversight by two Fellows of the College, one of the following two charges will apply:

  • Onsite Supervision/Oversight Fee – If the supervision/oversight is provided by two Fellows of the College located onsite, this fee will be charged per annum.
  • Offsite Oversight Fee – If the oversight provided by the two Fellows of the College is provided at a distance (the Fellows providing oversight are located offsite and are therefore required to travel) this fee will be charged per annum.

These fees will apply to all international medical graduates who undertake a period of clinical assessment of their surgical practice.
