One of my biggest thrills in teaching on this course is to see a diffident, awkward trainee struggle to tie a reef knot at the beginning of day one, then perform a slick endoscopic dissection on day three. Their rate of progress never ceases to amaze me, and the exhilaration they feel is infectious. And the tutors learn too!

ASSET Instructor

Fellows and Senior Trainees (SET4 and 5) from the various disciplines of surgery are welcome to join the course faculty. Attendance at a Surgical Teachers Course, although not a pre requisite, is highly recommended.

The allocation of instructors is co-ordinated centrally through the ASSET office. To ensure adequate support and guidance for completing the practical exercises, the instructor to participant ratio is 1:2.

What is expected of an ASSET Instructor?

New instructors are encouraged to attend the full course program to gain understanding of the course objectives and conduct of the program. Instructors can choose to participate in the section of the course most relevant to their practice.

Why become an ASSET Instructor?

Imparting knowledge and skills from Fellow to Trainee is vital to the future of surgical care and clinical education.  Trainees benefit significantly from the high student / teacher ratio which is a key objective in the ASSET program.  Your involvement as a tutor on these courses is highly valued by the trainee and the College.

Benefits of involvement include:

  • opportunity to meet and interact with other specialty colleagues in a collegial and sociable setting
  • environment in which to develop inter-professional relationships and develop rapport with trainees
  • participants benefit from the quality of experience and expertise of the course faculty
  • ideal setting to foster enduring, good clinical practice by trainees
  • an enjoyable and rewarding teaching experience
  • a forum to develop personal educational skills
  • activity recognised as continuing professional development (CPD points)
  • airfares, accommodation and meal expenses incurred for attendance during the course are reimbursed by the College where travel is required
