"Becoming an instructor in the CCrISP program is a valuable contribution to the training of junior doctors and provides a medical and educational leaning experience for the instructor."

How to become a CCrISP Instructor
Becoming a CCrISP Coordinator (for Nursing Staff)

How to become a CCrISP Instructor
  • The initial exposure to the CCrISP course in all cases will be as a Potential Instructor. Potential instructors will observe and involve themselves in all aspects of the 2 and a half day course. There is opportunity for potential instructors to actively participate in the demonstration and practical sessions. This is the most effective way for orientating new instructors to the course program.
  • Potential instructors with formal instructional training, as approved by the CCrISP subcommittee (e.g. on CCrISP, APLS, ‘Surgeons as Educators’ or other analogous courses) will then be eligible to teach their first course as an Instructor Candidate under the supervision of the Course Director, and following satisfactory demonstration of instructional ability, progress directly to become a qualified CCrISP Instructor.
  • Those without formal training are required to qualify in a CCrISP Instructors Course before teaching as an instructor candidate. The instructor course aims to familiarise potential instructors with contemporary educational principles and to assist participants in developing the necessary teaching and assessment skills using the CCrISP programme for reference. Currently, CCrISP Instructor Courses are scheduled twice a year, and are conducted over 21/2 days.

Benefits of involvement are:

  • Opportunity to meet and interact with other specialty colleagues in a collegiate and sociable setting
  • Truly appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to surgical critical care
  • Update personal knowledge and understanding of critical care issues
  • Ability to interact and develop rapport with trainees
  • Participants benefit from the quality of experience and expertise of the course faculty
  • Ideal setting to foster enduring, good clinical practice by trainees
  • An enjoyable and rewarding teaching experience
  • A forum to develop personal educational skills
  • Opportunity to undertake formal instructional training on a CCrISP Instructor Course
  • Activity recognised as continuing professional development
  • Airfares, accommodation and meals incurred during formal training process covered by the College
  • Accommodation and travel when instructing interstate covered by the College

Becoming a CCrISP Coordinator (for Nursing Staff)

Nursing professionals interested in taking an active role in the CCrISP program can do so as a CCrISP Course Coordinator.

The role of the CCrISP Co-ordinator

The Coordinator is primarily responsible for the administration, organisation and availability of the vast array of resources required for the course. Nurses who wish to coordinate on courses will be assisted in gaining the necessary experience.

Selection criteria

  • A candidate for the Coordinator's role should be a health professional with a base knowledge of medical core content and related equipment, e.g. Clinical Nurse Educator ICU/CCU, Nursing Education Coordinator, Registered Nurse with Intensive Care or Surgical ward experience
  • The candidate should also have proven organisational skills and the ability to communicate effectively
  • An interested candidate should be familiar with CCrISP course policies and procedures

Recruitment and training process

There are three steps to this process:

  • The candidate who satisfies the selection criteria must observe an CCrISP Provider Course in its entirety with an experienced CCrISP Coordinator
  • The Coordinator candidate actively assists an experienced coordinator on an CCrISP Provider Course to become familiar with the organisational aspects and required paperwork within a course
  • The Coordinator candidate actively manages the pre-course planning, organisation and conduct of an CCrISP Provider Course under the supervision and evaluation of an experienced Coordinator and the Course Director
  • Once the candidate has completed their first course as an independent coordinator, a written evaluation of their performance and recommendation is submitted to the National Coordinator, who approves their elevation to the position of an CCrISP Coordinator
  • All coordinators should be prepared to participate in at least one per year to maintain their coordinator status.
