Course overview

The Critical Literature Evaluation and Research (CLEAR) workshop is available to Fellows, Trainees and non RACS-affiliated healthcare professionals.

It is designed to provide tools to undertake critical appraisal of surgical literature and to assist surgeons in the conduct of clinical trials. These "hands on" workshops aim to make the language and methodology relevant to surgeons and the day to day activities in their practice.

This course runs for 2 days and is conducted for 32 to 35 participants, with a faculty of 4 to 5 instructors. It is a combination of lectures and small group teaching. Topics covered include:

  • Guide to clinical epidemiology
  • Framing clinical questions
  • Randomised controlled trial
  • Non randomised and uncontrolled studies
  • Evidence based surgery
  • Diagnostic and screening tests
  • Statistical significance
  • Searching the medical literature
  • Decision analysis and cost effectiveness studies

 

2009 course fee

AUD $1,183 (inclusive of GST)
NZ $1,209 (inclusive of GST)

Please note:
For courses held in Australia: General and Urology Trainees who are required to complete CLEAR as part of their training are exempt from the 10% GST levy applied on the course fee.  Courses conducted in New Zealand will be invoiced in NZ Dollars, regardless of residential country of applicant.

The waiting list to be placed onto a CLEAR workshop is approximately 12 months. Please note that the CLEAR course is a mandatory component of Surgical Training in General, Urology and Otolaryngology Head & Neck surgery. The course is also available to Fellows and non surgeons.

Who is required to complete CLEAR?

The CLEAR workshop is a mandatory component of Surgical Training in the following specialties:

Trainees required to complete CLEAR will automatically receive information about registering when entering the training program.

If CLEAR is a mandatory component of your training and you believe that you may be eligible for exemption please make your request in writing to the chair of your specialty training board.

Teaching on CLEAR

Do you have an interest in developing your formal teaching skills? Are you involved in clinical research methods and clinical epidemiology?

You can combine these interests by becoming a CLEAR faculty member. The benefits of involvement include:

  • teaching trainees
  • networking with peers
  • College Professional Development points (1 point per hour plus 4 points preparation, total: 20 points per course)
  • airfares, accommodation and meal costs incurred during formalised training process covered by the College
  • accommodation and travel when instructing interstate covered by the College
  • opportunity to be involved in CLEAR curriculum development


Instructor training process

  • Attend CLEAR workshop as participant/observer
  • Instruct on CLEAR workshop as an instructor candidate and critiqued by the course convenor
  • Once successfully critiqued, instruct on third course as a fully qualified CLEAR instructor

If you are willing to commit to a minimum of two courses per year for a minimum of three years, with continuing involvement in the development of the CLEAR program/curriculum, please register your interest (pdf) to become a CLEAR instructor and return to the CLEAR Administrator at the College.
