EMST
Trauma is a major killer of young people in Australia and New
Zealand. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons has a strong history
of involvement in trauma prevention. The EMST Course is a step towards a
greater role for the College in setting standards of care for severely
injured people.

What is EMST?
- A two and half day intensive course in the management of injury
victims in the first 1–2 hours following injury.
- Adapted from the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) course of
the American College of Surgeons in 1988.
- Emphasis on life saving skills and systematic clinical
approach.
Who is it for?
It is designed for all doctors who are involved in the early
treatment of serious injuries in urban or rural areas, whether or not
sophisticated emergency facilities are available:
- surgeons
- emergency physicians
- rural GPs
- anaesthetists
- intensivists
- medical officers in the Armed Forces
- trainees in the above specialties

Objectives
After completing the EMST course, a participant will be able to:
- demonstrate concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient
assessment
- establish management priorities in a trauma situation
- initiate primary and secondary management of unstable patients
- demonstrate skills used in initial assessment and management.

Curriculum and methods are outlined in a comprehensive manual which
is sent to participants six weeks prior to course commencement. Sixteen
doctors participate in each course. Instruction is provided by 7 to 8
specifically-trained EMST faculty members.
