In 2007 twenty-two (22) trainees were appointed into the SET Program
to commence in 2008
In 2008 twelve (12) trainees were appointed into the SET Program to
commence in 2009
In 2009 thirteen (13) trainees were appointed into the SET Program to
commence in 2010

Successful Progression to Interview
The Board has set the minimum eligibility criteria for progression to
interview as follows:
- Applicants must have a combined overall percentage score of 35% or
more on completion of the Structured Online Curriculum Vitae and
Structured Online Referee Reports

Structured Online Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- CV will score information on, and require documented evidence
for:
- Surgical and Medical experience
- Other qualifications (degrees, masters, PhD, FRACS, etc)
- Publications
- Presentations (Regional, National and International)
- Skills Courses and Scientific Meetings
- Non-Medical Achievements
- No additional CV information will be accepted from
applications.
Structured Online Referee Reports
Applicants must provide current contact details, including a
valid e-mail address for a minimum of eight (8) referees.
- How are referees selected?
- The referees are selected by the board from a list of referees
provided by the applicant
- No more than three (3) referees will be selected from a particular
rotation
- Must a referee meet certain criterion?
- Applicants must provide details for the supervising consultant who
had the greatest period of supervision over the applicant for each term
undertaken in the four (4) clinical years prior to the closing date for
applications
- Three (3) additional supervising consultants, each of the three
being from a different medical or surgical term undertaken by the
applicant lasting a minimum eight (8) weeks in the two (2) clinical
years prior to the closing date for applications

- What is the time period from which a referee will be considered
valid?
- Referees must be from within the last four (4) years
- How are the Structured Online Referee Reports collected and
scored?
- The Board will send an online structured referee report to five (5)
listed referees
- The score consists of an average of all five (5) referee
reports
- Should the minimum of five (5) valid referee reports not be
obtained, the applicant will be ineligible to proceed to interview
Semi-structured Interview
Date of interviews: 1 & 2 July 2010
Date invitations to interview sent: 16 June 2010
- The interviews for both Australian and New Zealand applicants will
be held at a single location
- The format of the interviews will be as follows:
- Four (4) interview panels
- Three (3) interviewers per panel
- A total of eight (8) key areas will be covered at interview
- Each of the four (4) panel interviews will last approximately ten
(10) to fifteen (15) minutes
- Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide
identification
Announcement of Offers
Announcement of Offers to successful applicants will be made
on: 16 July 2010
Feedback to both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be in
accordance with the Selection to Surgical Education and Training
policy.
- Rotations must have been completed within the validity period
specified.
- Applicants must have completed a minimum eight (8) week
neurosurgical rotation in the three (3) years prior to the closing date
for applications or be undertaking a neurosurgical rotation at the time
of application which is scheduled to be a minimum of eight (8)
weeks.
