RACSTA.WA (formerly known as WASTA) is the Western Australia regional branch of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trainee Association (RACSTA). The association comprises of all registered RACS basic surgical trainees (BSTs) and specialist surgical trainees (SSTs) in WA. In the beginning... It all began as WASTA in October 2005. The trainees were approached by the College to set up a trainee association. The College was committed to establishing a bi-national association encompassing all basic and specialist surgical trainees in both Australia and New Zealand. Trainees in each state were approached to attend the first bi-national meeting in Melbourne in November 2005. West Australian trainees ran an open state meeting at our CTEC College office in mid-September, with the help of Mr Thavaseelan, our WA Younger Fellow Committee Representative, at which he presented the concept of a trainee association. A committee was then formed, with each specialty groups electing their own specialty representatives, while the BSTs voted for their three representatives via email voting. WASTA was established. The committee members met for the first time and voted for the two representatives to attend the first RACSTA meeting in Melbourne. Today – WASTA underwent a change of name to conform to and support our parent body RACSTA, and as RACSTA.WA, it now has an established foundation, fully supported by RACSTA and recognised by the College. It is based at our WA RACS office in CTEC, University of Western Australia, and has both clerical and financial support from the College. It is a West Australian association, for all the WA surgical trainees. As a regional branch of RACSTA, this regional division is responsible for investigating any specific state issues associated with surgical training, as well as representing WA trainees in the bi-national RACSTA committee at the College head office in Melbourne. Mission statementRACSTA.WA is a group established for the trainees and its foremost role is to support and advocate for every surgical trainee's educational experience as well as their wellbeing.
