Basic Surgical TrainingThe Basic Surgical Training program will continue until the end of 2010. The program offers online resources, newsletters and a mentors program. During BST, Trainees use the curriculum objectives to gain understanding of the competencies as they apply to the principles of surgery. They acquire skills in basic surgery, clinical assessment and the use of diagnostic modalities. The Program takes a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years. The BST Program is comprised of four compulsory training and assessment components. Training components maybe undertaken concurrently. Other training options may be undertaken concurrently with the Basic Surgical Training Program. These options are currently organised through external providers such as universities or hospitals. Trainees in the second or subsequent years of Basic Surgical Training are encouraged to consider undertaking research projects as one of the Elective Rotations within their Clinical Placements. Application to the Chairman of the Board of Basic Surgical Training can be approved for leave of absence (interruption of training) for periods of 6 or 12 months.
