for appointment to the position of Professor/Associate Professor of
Surgery based at Nepean Hospital. The successful applicant will be
appointed to the Nepean Clinical School of the Faculty of Medicine in
the discipline of Surgery and will be teaching in the University of
Sydney Medical Program, actively conduct and contribute to research in
an area of special interest, supervise postgraduate research students,
supervise and coordinate the work and training of Registrars within the
hospital and other postgraduate teaching and have acute and elective
clinical service responsibilities in the relevant discipline.
The appointment will be full-time, initially for five years but may be
renewed without advertisement for a further period, subject to need and
the availability of funds. The Nepean Clinical School and SWAHS are

Locum- Breast / General Surgeon, Gosford (Dec 2008-Sept 2009)
Gosford is located centrally between Sydney and Newcastle, with only
one hours drive in either direction. The Hunter Valley, famous for
incredible wines is only 130kms away. But why leave? Central Coast is
blessed with superb beaches and the beautiful Brisbane Waters. Terrigal
beach is a favourite tourist spot, with great restaurants for fine or
casual dining. Avoca beach is the favourite surfing beach and an awesome

trails around Brisbane Waters and bush walks into the mountains, so why
not explore? See pelican feeding at the Entrance, hire a paddle boat or
explore the water-ways by kayak. Be entertained in the evenings by our

nearby factory outlets. So much to do, or just relax during your time
off.
The position is for 9 months, relieving a busy breast / general surgeon
whilst she is on maternity leave. The practice manages approximately
100-150 new breast cancer cases per year. Although the bulk of referrals
are breast related, there will always be an interesting mix of general
surgical cases. You will have admitting rights to Gosford Hospital as
well as North Gosford Private Hospital. Your three workplaces are all
within two minutes of eachother. Commitments include approximately 2.5
days consulting in private rooms, one full day public operating at
Gosford Hospital and one full day private operating. A short endoscopy
list once per month is also included. The successful applicant will
participate in the oncall roster. This includes one weekday on call per
fortnight and one weekend in ten. You will be expected to participate in
morbidity / mortality meetings, student and registrar teaching and the
breast cancer multi-disciplinary meetings (one hour per fortnight).
Applicants need to posess a primary medical qualification registerable
in NSW and be a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Insurance for public patients can be covered by the public hospital but
you will need your own private insurance cover. You will require your
own transport and accomodation.
Earnings will be approximately $1800 per day. The potential is there to

The Newcastle Transplant Unit provides services in renal
transplantation for the Hunter, New England and Northern Rivers Health
Areas in New South Wales, Australia.
In Newcastle it is located at the John Hunter Hospital and the Royal
Newcastle Centre which is a 600-bed principal referral hospital
affiliated with the University of Newcastle.
It is a multidisciplinary specialist Unit carrying out upwards of 25
renal transplants per year. It seeks a Fellow in Transplant Surgery
available from the 19 January 2008. The position is for a 12 month
period in the first instance.
You must have a medical degree registrable in NSW and possess
Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or specialist
recognition as provided for in the staff Specialist (State) Award or the
Health Insurance Act 1973.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- For end stage renal disease patients assessments of
transplantability and management of post operative transplant care
including immunosuppression.
- To train in and carry out all aspects of deceased donor and live
donor renal transplantation.
- To train in and carry out vascular access construction and
maintenance.
- To train in vascular ultrasound.
- To assist and train in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.

Cabrini Health is a private not for profit organisation consisting of
450 beds over four
campuses. The Colorectal Fellow positions will be an attachment to the
Cabrini Monash
University Department of Surgery headed by Professor Adrian Polglase.
There are 5
colorectal surgeons within the department all of whom are members of
the Colorectal Surgical
Society of Australia and New Zealand. In excess of 300 major colorectal
cases are performed
at Cabrini each year. The range of surgical procedures includes
laparoscopic colorectal
surgery, as well as routine and advanced anal and transanal surgery.
Cabrini is a referral
centre for patients requiring transanal endoscopic microsurgery.
The appointee's clinical responsibilities will principally be assisting
colorectal surgeons in the
full range of surgical procedures. The clinical exposure will also
include experience in the
gastrointestinal physiology laboratory.
In addition the fellow will play a role with ward consultations,
participating in ward rounds,
assisting in covering surgeons during their leave etc. The appointee
would be expected to participate
in the undergraduate teaching program for the medical students who
rotate through the
hospital and take part in post-graduate presentations, meetings and
clinical audits.
The appointee will be required to spend a prescribed time in clinical
research within the
Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery and will have a core
role in conducting
clinical research utilizing the resource of a web-based neoplasia
database affiliated with the
CSSANZ. In addition the appointee will have the opportunity to
participate in the
investigations and research of the Cabrini Gastro Intestinal Diagnostic
Unit. There will also be
involvement with the MRI department, developing expertise in the MRI
staging of rectal
carcinoma.

Ophthalmologist at Dili National Hospital, Timor
Leste
(East Timor Eye Program)
2008-2010 (2011)
Established in July 2001, the East Timor Eye Program (ETEP) is a
program targeted at delivering national eye-care services to East Timor.
ETEP has already provided initial interim eye care for East Timor and is
now working with the East Timorese Local Health Authorities to build a
comprehensive and sustainable eye care system for the future.
In 2008, new District Hospitals will be commissioned and Eye
Departments will be set up in five of these District Hospitals to help
enhance the quality of service delivery in the districts.
The ETEP is seeking to engage an ophthalmologist to
oversee the running of the Eye Clinic at Dili National Hospital as well
as conduct and supervise outreach services in the district hospitals of
Timor Leste.
The ETEP's ophthalmologist will be based in Dili and
will be expected to engage in surgical audits as well as appropriate
research in public health as needed. Teaching and training of local
Timorese doctors in Ophthalmology will be an ongoing responsibility. The
ophthalmologist will also maintain a close working relationship with the
visiting teams from Australia under the auspices of the Australia -
Timor Leste Program of Assistance for Specialised Services (ATLASS)
which is funded by AusAID.
This is an exciting job at an exciting time for an
ophthalmologist who is willing to take on the challenge of establishing
eye services in Timor Leste under the auspices of the Ministry of
Health, Republic of Timor Leste and the East Timor Eye
Program.
The initial contract will be for a period of one year
with a probation period of three months. The contract period is expected
to last three to four years by mutual agreement.

ROYAL AUSTRALASIAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS
General Surgeon required for
Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV)
Dili, Timor Leste (East Timor)
Full time position for 6-12 months to commence ASAP
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) manages
several donor funded health projects in the Asia-Pacific Region. Since
2001 the College has been providing surgical services to improve the
availability and quality of general and specialist surgical services to
the people of Timor Leste through the training of local Timorese doctors
and nurses and assisting with the delivery of tertiary health care
services. The program currently employs 4 full-time clinical advisors
(general surgeon, anaesthetist, intensive care nurse and operating
theatre nurse) at the HNGV and co-ordinates approximately 12 specialist
surgical team visits per year.
The HNGV as the national hospital for Timor Leste is responsible for
the provision of a wide range of surgical and non-surgical specialist
services and it is the national referral hospital for the 5
district hospitals in the country. The hospital provides a range of
surgical services such as general surgery (including paediatric),
obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedic, ENT and oro-maxillo-facial
surgery. The hospital has 268 in-patient beds including 70 surgical, 35
paediatric, 10 neonatal and a 5 - bed intensive care unit, and a staff
of 60 doctors (40 specialists) and 150 nurses. The hospital is currently
undergoing extensive rebuilding with the construction of a new theatre,
wards, emergency and ICU complex.
The Ministry of Health has requested the RACS to provide a second
general surgeon. This position is especially intended to assist in the
development of surgical services in the whole of Timor, including models
of training. The RACS is therefore looking for a suitably qualified
general surgeon with an interest in helping this young nation improve
its surgical services capacity.
