International ScholarshipsRowan Nicks Scholarship
Applications for 2009 are now closed. Applications for 2010 will open in December 2008; refer to this webpage for the official re-open date. Rowan Nicks, OBE, FRACS, (pictured) is one of our oldest surviving Fellows and has been a major benefactor of the College since 1987, when the Rowan Nicks Scholarship was established. It is Rowan's wish that a scholarship should be offered annually to young surgeons from selected developing countries who have shown particular promise and are destined to be leaders in their own countries. The scholarship is tenable for up to a year in either Australia or New Zealand, in an institution where young surgeons would learn not just the craft of surgery, but where they would become involved in teaching, research and administration. Rowan sees these Scholarships as nurturing surgical leaders of the future. RACS is establishing a database of where scholars might be placed in Australia or New Zealand, and is seeking expressions of interest from Departments of Surgery or Heads of Units who feel they can offer a milieu in which young surgeons can be nurtured. Please note that the Rowan Nicks Selection Committee will make the final recommendation of the 2009 applicants to the College Council in October 2008. Once an official decision is made all applicants will be officially notified of the outcome via email and post by 31st December 2008.
