Breast Surgery

Purpose

  • The Breast Surgery Section fosters and maintains a high standard of care in all aspects of breast surgery.
  • Research into the area is promoted by this section.
  • Its members are kept up-to-date with relevant developments in the field.

The Breast Surgery Section Executive is very supportive of work done into the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, and have assisted in drafting of numerous national guidelines relation to the treatment of breast cancer.

Achievements

  • The National Breast Surgical Audit was established in 1999 and is the first national surgical audit of its kind. Surgeons involved in breast cancer treatment are provided with a mechanism to monitor their practice and make comparative evaluations with the national average.

  • The highly successful Sentinel Node versus Axillary Clearance (SNAC) trial completed in 2001 is currently being followed-up with SNAC2. The trial is one of only four international randomised trials looking at sentinel node biopsy as a viable alternative to level 2 dissection for staging the axilla in smaller, clinically node negative breast cancer, with significantly less morbidity.

  • The My Journey Kit has been released with the endorsement of the Breast Surgery Section Executive, and is a resource developed by those who have had breast cancer for those who have been recently diagnosed. Breast Cancer Network Australia aims to get the kit out to everyone diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia within two weeks of diagnosis.
