Trauma
Trauma often involves unpredictable events in the
general community which are dramatic and newsworthy. They are
often the cause of great sadness and disruption to individuals,
families, communities and countries.
The RACS
Trauma Committee and its subcommittees has a long history of
development and activity in trauma prevention and the management of
trauma patients. The RACS Trauma Committee's initiatives in the Early Management of Severe
Trauma (EMST) educational program has given the Royal
Australasian College of Surgeons a strong lead in the area of trauma
education and have provided a broad and strong platform for this
College's interaction with other colleges. The Definitive
Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) course, strongly recommended for all
surgeons involved in the management of major trauma, is a two-day course
which provides hands-on practical experiences that focusses on
surgical operative technique and surgical decision making processes.
The College participates in The National Trauma Registry Consortium
(Australia and New Zealand). The 2005 report of the NTRC (PDF 1.1Mb) is
available.
