Workshop information

What will you learn?

The Supervisors and Trainers for Surgical Education and Training (SAT SET) course aims to enable supervisors and trainers to effectively fulfil the responsibilities of their important roles, under the new Surgical Education and Training (SET) program.

  • Participants will learn to use the more common of the workplace assessment tools that have been adopted as part of SET, focusing on the Mini-Clinical Evaluation exercise (Mini CEX) and Directly Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS).
  • Participants will also explore strategies to improve their management of Trainees, especially those who are under-performing.
  • There will be an opportunity to develop understanding of College training policies, supervisor and trainer responsibilities, the appeals process and legal support provided by the College.

Key learning outcomes

  • To understand how to use competency based assessment tools.
  • To be aware of the College's expectations of supervisors and trainers.
  • To gain skills in the use of performance management strategies.
  • To understand the College's training policies and legal issues.

Target group – This course is recommended for supervisors and trainers. Participants are encouraged to attend the SAT SET Course in conjunction with the Surgical Teachers Course.

This material can be used to practice the In-Training Assessment tools, Mini-CEX and DOPS. Assessment proformas in the manual can be used alongside the Mini-CEX and DOPS scenarios:

The Performance Counselling for Supervisors handout (PDF 97Kb) contains tips that can be used to critique the performance of the supervisor in the Mid-Term Meeting Scenario.

Cancellation policy:

  • In the unlikely event that insufficient registrations are received to make the activity viable, or the date or location of a Professional Development activity is changed, the College takes no responsibility for additional individual costs incurred as a result. Please note that registrations are not confirmed until payment has been processed.
  • If a participant cancels their place in a workshop the following conditions apply:
    • For cancellations between two and four weeks before the workshop, participants are eligible for a 50% refund.
    • There are no refunds for cancellations less than two weeks before the workshop.
    • However, at the discretion of the Professional Development Manager, registrants may be offered a refund or given the opportunity to transfer to another relevant Professional Development activity.
    • Consideration will be given to circumstances of a medical or compassionate nature.
