2011 Research scholarships and fellowships

Applications for the 2011 scholarship and fellowship program are now closed

Important general information

  • Bequest and sponsor funded scholarships and fellowships, unless otherwise specified, are intended to support applicants who wish to take time away from clinical positions to undertake a full-time research project.

  • Foundation for Surgery scholarships and Surgeon Scientist Scholarships are available on a part-time basis. Part-time is defined as half the usual research hours worked by a research scholar. Part-time scholarships are restricted to scholarship recipients wishing to undertake research only. Scholarships will not be offered on this basis for scholars to concurrently undertake research and clinical loads. Please refer to scholarship conditions for more information.

  • Where applications are open to all surgical Trainees then applicants to surgical training are also eligible to apply in anticipation of their acceptance into the SET Program. They must be accepted into the SET Program by 1 August in the year prior to the commencement of the scholarship in order to take up the award. Applicants for Surgical Training if successful are offered a place on the program by the Specialty Training Board that they have applied to. When accepting an offer applicants must advise the Specialty Training Board that they have applied for a College scholarship and if successful will be deferring from the program.

  • Current surgical Trainees must notify their Specialty Training Board that they wish to apply to the College for a research scholarship. Such Trainees must obtain from the Board written confirmation that at the time of application they are progressing satisfactorily in their program to be eligible for interruption if awarded a scholarship. Please note, permission to interrupt is not automatic and will only be granted subject to meeting the Specialty Training Board's eligibility criteria for interruption.

  • Surgical Trainee applicants must adhere to the training Board's regulations.

  • Unless stated otherwise, these scholarships and fellowships are conditional upon the applicant being a permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand, or an international medical graduate accepted into the College as a Trainee. They are also only available, unless specified otherwise, to conduct research at an approved institute in Australia or New Zealand.

  • The availability of the scholarships and fellowships advertised on the College website is subject to funding.

  • Where indicated, successful applicants must procure 25% of the funding for the award from their respective research departments.

  • Confidential reports from the intended supervisors and referees must reach the College by the closing date for applications. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that this occurs. If the current and intended supervisor is the same person, the applicant should request a reference from another individual who is able to comment on the applicant's suitability for research.

  • Please read the scholarship/fellowship conditions carefully prior to making an application. Conditions are correct at the time of publishing; however they may be updated prior to scholarships/fellowships being offered.

  • Applicants must submit an electronic and a hard copy application in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format. Applications must be completed on the prescribed form, accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae. Please do not submit the hard copy application form or CV bound in any way or on coloured paper. Applications must be received by the College no later than 4pm Friday 30 April 2010.

Late applications will not be considered

  • It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the application is received by the Scholarship Coordinator. Please contact the Scholarship Coordinator if you do not receive confirmation.

  • Only short-listed applicants will be interviewed. Interviews will be arranged by the Scholarship Coordinator and held via teleconference in June.
