Governance & Advocacy Committee

Background

The Governance and Articles Working Party (GAWP) was established in June 2003 by Council to provide a forum to discuss and make recommendations for change to Council on its governance structures and processes. This work is ongoing and consequently a standing committee, the Governance and Articles Committee (GAC), was formed.

In 2008, Council approved the further development of GAC:

• to encompass the identification of relevant public policy issues
• to adopt a strategic approach by the College to the advocacy of these issues.

The name of the committee was altered to the Governance and Advocacy Committee in acknowledgement of its expanded role.

Role today

The Governance and Advocacy Committee (GAC):

• considers matters pertaining to the governance structure of the College and the implementation and review of the Memoranda and Articles of Association
• develops the College’s strategic approach to the identification and advocacy of public policy affecting surgeons and the broader healthcare sector.

The deliberations and recommendations from the Committee are then considered by Council.
