Originally the Surgical Teachers Education Program (STEP)
Committee was known as the Surgeons as Educators (SAE) Committee
which was established in 1999. The Surgeons as Educators philosophy
was to foster the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of surgical
education, training and assessment within the College and this
philosophy is still instilled in STEP today. Since 1999, the SAE
Committee has governed a 5 day Surgeons as Educators Course, a 2.5
day Surgical Teachers Course and the Surgical Education program of
the RACS Annual Scientific Congress.
Activities
With the introduction of work-based training and assessment in
2007, the Committee established a new course and sub-committee,
Supervisors and Trainers for Surgical Education and Training (SAT
SET) Committee, to meet the need of supervisors and trainers using
work based assessment tools. This year we also launched a
flexible online version of SATSET.
In 2010 the Academy of Surgical Educators was established and
the role of the Surgeons as Educators Committee was reviewed to
clarify the respective roles of the Academy, the Committee and its
sub-committee. The new committee replacing the Surgeons as
Educators Committee is the STEP Committee.
In 2011 STEP Committee launched a 3 hour workshop called Keeping
Trainees on Course which was developed from feedback received from
SATSET participants. This course focuses on encouraging
feedback and providing skills in self-directed learning.
In 2012 the committee will launch a newly revised Surgical
Teachers course, an online SATSET course for Trainees, and in 2013
a Surgeons as Educators course.
