Fellows, Trainees and Associates
On behalf of the organising Committee we would like to invite
you to the 81st Annual Scientific Congress in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia in 2012. The meeting will start with The Convocation on
Sunday the 6th of May and conclude on Thursday the 10th.
The theme of the meeting will be "The Making of a Surgeon". It
is our intention throughout the meeting to explore all aspects of
Surgical Practice. The Sectional convenors are constructing focused
thematic sessions, Master classes and research paper sessions to
reflect the current controversies and advances in their specialty.
This provides a wonderful opportunity for the trainee and
practicing surgeon to attend many and varied sessions to resource
practice and knowledge with the intermingling and cross
fertilisation of many specialty groups.
The Plenary sessions we hope will be both challenging and
informative. It is our intention to explore the issues of
Communication, Collaboration, Professionalism and Teamwork. This
will spotlight many of our nine competencies. These areas of
surgical practices have always been considered implicit; skills
that we pick up by example without any formal training or
discussion. This is concerning as dysfunction in these areas seem
to be the cause of greatest harm to our patients. There is emerging
recognition and research to develop codification of these areas so
that we can teach, assess and develop these skills. International
experts have been invited to the Congress to explore these
areas.
The meeting has been embraced by the Government of Malaysia and
The Malaysian College of Surgeons. Through Professor S.K. Lum, past
President of the Malaysian College, we have been given access to
the Political and Surgical leaders of the region. The meeting will
give a unique opportunity to view the beauty of Malaysia and
surgical practice through the eyes of our enthusiastic hosts.
The venue for the meeting is the spectacularly situated Kuala
Lumpur Convention Centre overlooking the 40 hectare KLCC Park and
the PETRONAS Twin Towers. An excellent Associates program has been
developed highlighting Malaysian culture and cuisine. Post-congress
tours showcasing the breadth of Malaysia will tempt delegates and
Associates to extend their stay.
We look forward to welcoming you to Kuala Lumpur in May
2012.
Mr Philip Truskett
