New and Emerging Techniques - Surgical (NET-S) was developed
with the aim of providing an early warning system for
identification of new and emerging surgical techniques and
technologies prior to their introduction into routine clinical
practice. NET-S has developed unique methodologies to improve the
horizon scanning process, particularly in the area of surgery.
This is occurring through the following strategies:
- direct communication with Fellows of the College
- close surveillance of abstracts presented at relevant specialty
meetings
- ongoing searching of the literature describing new techniques
and technologies
- establishing links with key players and targeting other
appropriate groups, such as medical device manufacturers
- soliciting input from surgeons, consumers and other relevant
groups via this website.
Surgical procedures detected through the horizon scanning
process are assessed via:
- horizon scanning prioritising summaries
- horizon scanning reports.
Surgical procedures that have more widespread use in Australia,
or that are already established into routine surgical practice, are
assessed via accelerated systematic reviews, systematic reviews or
technology overviews.
Horizon scanning prioritising summary
Short (approximately 5 to 10 pages) documents that provide
readers with a background on a particular technology and present
the evidence available pertaining to the safety and efficacy of
that technology, which can be used as a basis for deciding if the
procedure should be further assessed, monitored or if no further
assessment is required.
When a procedure or technology is considered to be of
substantial impact and have a considerable evidence base, a more
detailed assessment, in the form of a horizon scanning report, will
be undertaken. View recently completed horizon scanning prioritising summaries.
Horizon scanning report
Reports are comprehensive (approximately 30 to 50 pages)
documents that assess surgical technologies or techniques that are
new or emerging into Australian healthcare. View recently completed
horizon scanning reports.
All prioritising summaries and horizon scanning reports are
available for download at the Australian New Zealand Horizon Scanning Network
(ANZHSN) website or are available upon request.
As a member of Euroscan, all NET-S prioritising summaries are
also available from the EuroScan database.
