The Breast Surgery Section fosters and maintains a high standard
of care in all aspects of breast surgery. Research into the area is
actively promoted by the Section. The Breast Surgery Section is
open to all Fellows with an interest in this area. The
Section is governed by an Executive Committee which reports to
Fellowship Services Committee. The Section supports work on the
diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
Activities
The National Breast
Surgical Audit established in 1999, is the first national
surgical audit of its kind. Surgeons involved in breast cancer
treatment are provided with a mechanism to monitor their practice
and make comparative evaluations with the national average.
The Section has assisted in the drafting of numerous national
guidelines in relation to the treatment of breast cancer.
The highly successful 2001 Sentinel Node versus Axillary
Clearance (SNAC) trial is currently being followed-up with SNAC2.
The trial is one of only four international randomised trials
looking at sentinel node biopsy as a viable alternative to level 2
dissection for staging the axilla in smaller, clinically node
negative breast cancer, with significantly less morbidity.
The My Journey Kit ,endorsed
by the Breast Surgery Section Executive, has been developed by
those who have had breast cancer for those who have been recently
diagnosed. Breast Cancer Network Australia aims to supply the kit
to everyone diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia within two
weeks of diagnosis.
Scientific and education programs are run at the Annual
Scientific Congress (ASC)
