The Foundation for Surgery John Loewenthal Research Scholarship was previously established in honour of Sir John Loewenthal who served as President of RACS from 1971-1974 and was intended to promote surgical research.
In 2015 it was decided to change the conditions of the scholarship to broaden its appeal, raise its profile and increase applications. It was rescoped and relaunched as the Foundation for Surgery John Loewenthal Project Grant.
Who can apply
RACS Fellows and Trainees, either as an individual or as the Lead Researcher on behalf of a group.
Please note that this grant is not available for SET applicants.
Applications can be made to undertake a surgical research project with definite aims and outcomes; or for funding of an innovative service or piece of equipment. Preference will be given to applicants early in their careers.

$100,000 per annum
Up to two years, subject to satisfactory performance after 12 months.
