This scholarship was established to honour Professor Louis Waller's contributions to the Monash University Faculty of Law and medico-legal issues over more than 35 years.

The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2003 and is intended to promote and support research into the legal issues faced by surgeons.

Who can apply?

RACS Fellows and SET Trainees.

SET applicants are eligible to apply for a scholarship in anticipation of their acceptance into the SET Program. Evidence of acceptance into the program must be received by the ANZ Scholarship and Grant Coordinator by November in the year before the award commences in order to be eligible.

Law graduates are also invited to apply.


Applicants must be undertaking or intending to undertake doctoral research on the topic of medico-legal risks and the law in this area. Non-RACS applicants must be sponsored by a RACS Fellow.

$66,000 ($60,000 stipend plus $6,000 departmental maintenance) per annum; research departments will be expected to provide 25 per cent of the funding per annum.


Up to three years. Continuation each year is dependent upon satisfactory progress.
