Professor Philip Walker Vascular Surgery Research Scholarship

The Professor Philip Walker Vascular Surgery Research Scholarship encourages research undertaken within a higher degree in an area related to vascular surgical disease

Professor Walker, past Professor of Clinical Surgery and Head of Academic Discipline of Surgery at the University of Queensland, was a pre-eminent teacher, researcher and clinically active vascular surgeon who served as an examiner in Vascular Surgery for RACS.

This scholarship is funded by a generous bequest from Professor Walker who died following illness at a time when he was still very active in his areas of interest. 

  • Policy and guideline

    Recipients are required to:

    - present their research at the annual meeting of the Surgical Research Society of Australasia (or an agreed equivalent) at least once during, or in the 12 months following, the scholarship period.

  • Who can apply?

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to be:

    - a RACS Fellow
    - Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) or
    - SET Trainee
    - enrolled (or intending to enrol) in a higher degree such as a Masters, PhD or the equivalent and undertaking research related to vascular surgery.

    Please note, previous recipients are ineligible to reapply for this scholarship.

  • Activity

    Your research activity needs to be undertaken as part of a higher degree, with a focus relating to vascular surgery.

    Unless otherwise negotiated or stipulated in the respective guideline, the commencement date for scholarships is 1 January in the year following application.

    Your application is to include:

    - your career and employment details
    - your research proposal and proposed budget
    - a letter of endorsement of your research from your university/specialty training committee/PhD supervisor. 

  • Selection and awarding
    Selection
    - assessment is via written application only. There is no interview for this scholarship.
    - the selection panel is comprised of representatives of the ANZ Scholarship and Grant Committee.

    Awarding
    - payment is made to the administering institution in one instalment prior to 1 March in the scholarship year (upon receipt of a valid tax invoice).
