What we do
Over the years, RACS has had a long association with Papua New Guinea’s medical workforce, working closely with doctors, nurses, health professionals and with medical registrars at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).
RACS currently receives support from the Australian Government through the PNGAusPartnership to deliver clinical visits, training and mentoring to ANGAU Memorial Hospital and the national referral hospital - Port Moresby General Hospital under the three-year PNG Clinical Support Program (CSP).
The program aims to enhance the quality of care at ANGAU Memorial Hospital in Lae and Port Moresby General Hospital and enhance specialist training at the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Along with other Australasian specialist and medical colleges and associations, we are pleased to support the continued strengthening of clinical services in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
In addition to targeted training delivered through the CSP, the Rowan Nicks Pacific Islands Scholarship is offered annually to PNG surgeons who demonstrate the necessary qualities to become leaders. The scholarship supports training opportunities for PNG surgeons and Trainees, both in Australia and New Zealand, contributing to increasing capacity of PNG’s tertiary health service and, importantly, to the long-term sustainability of tertiary health service provision in PNG.
