The Governance and Advocacy Committee is responsible for the following:

  • Considers matters pertaining to the governance structure of the College and the implementation and review of the College Constitution
  • Develops the College's strategic approach to the identification and advocacy of public policy affecting surgeons and the broader healthcare sector.
  • These deliberations and recommendations from the committee are presented for consideration by Council.

The Governance and Articles Working Party (GAWP) was established in June 2003 by Council to provide a forum to discuss and make recommendations for change to Council on its governance structures and processes. This work is ongoing and consequently a standing committee, the Governance and Articles Committee (GAC), was formed.

In 2008, Council approved the further development of GAC:

  • to encompass the identification of relevant public policy issues
  • to adopt a strategic approach by the College to the advocacy of these issues.

The name of the committee was altered to the Governance and Advocacy Committee in acknowledgement of its expanded role.
