Medical Students' Surgical Workshops (MSSWs)
Three MSSWs are conducted every
year to promote surgery as a career for Victorian Medical Students.
Held in the RACS Skills Lab, participants (32 at each event) rotate
in small groups through four workstations, to experience hands-on
practical skills relevant to the surgical speciality being
featured. In 2017 FLS, Plastic, Urology, Vascular and Orthopaedic
surgery were featured across the three workshops.
workshops are designed to promote careers in surgery, promote RACS,
and by inviting the students into the skills laboratory, to
demistify the RACS.
Increasing registrations of interest are testament to the
popularity of the workshops: In 2017 over 200 students registered
their interest in attending these workshops and we are expecting
similar numbers in 2018.
In 2018 three workshops will be held on 27 May, 26 August
and 30 September. Invitations will be ciruclated via student
surgical interest groups and university administration.
Expression of interest for these
workshops will open early in 2018.
JDocs - Developing a Surgical Career Workshop
The Royal Australasian College of
Surgeons has developed the JDocs Framework and supporting
educational and assessment resources to guide junior doctors
interested in a career in surgery.
This workshop will provide
further information about JDocs, the pre-requisites for application
to the Surgical Education Program and insight into the Training
Program from a Trainee perspective.
There will also be an opportunity
to engage in a number of surgical skills stations facilitated by
Fellows and Trainees.
We are confident you will find
the workshop very rewarding as part of your professional
development and return home with the knowledge to assist you
towards a surgical career.

Preparation for Practice
We aim to create a comprehensive and interactive two day course
addressing practice adminstration; financial and practice business
structures; creating relationships between fellows and referring
doctors, staff, private hospitals and private insurance companies;
medico-legal aspects; and indentifying pressures and strategies to
maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The next Victorian P4P
workshop will be held over the weekend of 22, 23 September 2018

The Victorian Annual Surgical Meeting
The Victorian Annual Surgeons
Meeting (Vic ASM) is an opportunity for both accomplished
and aspiring surgeons
from across Victoria, across specialties to gather for a scientific
program. The meeting is held in alternate years in the city and a
regional centre and professional development workshops are included
as a part of the
program, prior to the formal opening of the meeting.
Typically, the theme of the meeting is explored through plenary
sessions and symposia with invited and guest speakers, providing a
forum for lively discussions between speakers and delegates.
Scientific research is also presented at the meeting: the Call
for Abstracts attracted a high number of submissions in 2018, with
58 being accepted for presentation - 37 oral and 21 poster
presentations. This provides an important platform for trainees,
IMGs, junior doctors and medical students to present their
Prizes and awards, including the DCAS scholarship are offered
in four categories, judged by a panel of surgeons at the meeting.
In 2018 the presented abstracts will be published online in the ANZ
Journal of Surgery.
To remember Mr G J Royal for his contribution to surgery the
formal dinner features a lecture presented by an esteemed member of
the medical profession, usually a surgeon. Recipients of Victorian
Medical School awards, and other Regional Awards are also
recognised at this dinner.
The trade show exhibition is an important part of the
sponsors are integral to the ongoing success of this event.
The 2018 meeting will be held on 20 - 21 October in Melbourne.
