Interim Assessment Overview

RACS makes recommendations when assessing an IMG's surgeon qualifications and experience. This is called the Interim Assessment.

The Interim Assessment forms the basis for the term of clinical assessment of the IMG surgeon's practice. The recommendation is made following a document based assessment and/or interview. The Interim Assessment is approved by the Board of Surgical Education and Training (BSET). The Interim Assessment cannot be altered during the term of clinical assessment without approval by BSET.

The classifications which arise from the documentary assessment and/or interview are:

  • Not comparable to an Australian or New Zealand trained surgeon
  • Partially comparable to an Australian or New Zealand trained surgeon
  • Substantially comparable to an Australian or New Zealand trained surgeon

Area of Need applicants will in addition receive an assessment on the suitability of the position for clinical assessment purposes.

Substantially comparable and partially comparable recommendations

IMGs recommended as Substantially Comparable or Partially Comparable have 2 years to find a suitable clinical assessment position and 4 years from commencement of clinical assessment to complete all requirements stipulated in their assessment outcome, including the Fellowship Examination (if applicable).
