Interim assessment: partially comparable

IMG surgeons are assessed as partially comparable if:

  • evidence is provided of recent surgical practice in the relevant specialty
  • evidence of completion of a specialist training program comparable to the College programs including the competencies, skills and attributes, but
  • a comparable exit examination to the RACS Fellowship Examination has not been completed and
  • the depth and scope of surgical practice in the specialty since the attainment of their surgical qualification is not of a sufficiently high standard or duration as to waive the need to sit the Fellowship Examination.

IMG surgeons who are assessed as partially comparable will be required to complete all of the following requirements before being eligible for specialist recognition and Fellowship of the College:

  • undergo a period of up to 24 months of clinical assessment by MBA Level 3 supervision requirements. In some circumstances the clinical assessment may be conducted by Level 4 supervision if the IMG is in an Area of Need position
  • complete specified up-skilling or courses
  • complete professional development activities
  • pass the Fellowship Examination

The flowchart depicts the process required for an IMG if they are assessed as partially comparable.
