The College notes that medical practitioners with specialist registration can choose not to retain their fellowship of the relevant specialist medical college and remain on the specialist register.

Submission to the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council re recognition of podiatric surgery as a specialty

The College opposes the submission by the Podiatry Board of Australia for specialist recognition of "Surgical Podiatrists" on the grounds of inadequate standards of education, which is counter to another stated Object of Law: that health practitioners be suitably qualified and competent.

Whilst the College fully supports requirements to maintain standards and protect the patient, there is concern that health professionals may not seek early attention for themselves if they believe their livelihood will be placed at risk by the rigid implementation of reporting and disciplinary requirements.
