More than 90 delegates from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the United States gathered recently for the combined Developing a Career in Academic Surgery (DCAS) and Annual Research Conference (ARC).

Academic surgeons from every specialty and career stage came together to share knowledge, engage in panel discussions, and explore the latest in surgical science through high-impact research presentations, rapid-fire abstracts, and interactive workshops.

The standout highlight of the event was the Jepson Lecture, delivered by Laureate Professor Graeme Clark AC, Lister Medallist, Lasker Laureate—the inventor of the cochlear implant. Introduced by vice president, Professor Ray Sacks, FRACS, as both a humanitarian and a pioneer, Professor Clark captivated the audience with his remarkable journey. From his childhood ambition “to fix ears” at age five, to developing a device that has transformed millions of lives worldwide, his story was a powerful reminder of the impact of clinician-led innovation. He encouraged attendees to never stop being curious with their research and received a standing ovation when presented with his plaque.

Other highlights included a day session on building a career in academic surgery, insights from international leaders such as Professor Timothy Donahue, Dr Alice King, Associate Professor Joseph Phillips, Professor Vikas Dudeja, and Professor Juliet Emamaullee. The program also featured practical advice on publishing research from ANZ Journal of Surgery editor, Professor Julian Smith. Inspirational messages, including Professor Peter Chong, FRACS reflection: “Our hands heal one person at a time. Our research heals many at a time,” resonated strongly with attendees.

This conference was designed to spark collaboration and shape the future of surgical research across our region. Congratulations to the award winners and thank you to the industry experts and international speakers who shared their expertise. Pictured are our international speakers receiving plaques and a uniquely Australian gift—a sporting scarf in their university colours.
