Next year marks 100 years of RACS and 65 years of the Louis Barnett Prize, which recognises excellence in surgical research in Aotearoa New Zealand. Make it your year too.
Established in 1962, and one of the College’s most prestigious prizes, the prize honours Sir Louis Barnett CMG, a pioneering surgical researcher, founding member of RACS and the first surgeon from Aotearoa New Zealand to serve as president of the College.
For more than six decades, the award has recognised excellence in surgical research and highlighted the significant contributions of emerging surgeon-scientists.
As part of the RACS Founders Centenary celebrations in Dunedin in February 2027, finalists will present their research in the Barnett Theatre, named in Sir Louis' honour. The winner will then be announced at the Centenary Dinner at Larnach Castle, providing a fitting backdrop for this milestone year.
The prize is open to Trainees and Fellows within their first five years of Fellowship who are citizens or permanent residents of Aotearoa New Zealand. It offers an opportunity to showcase research on a prestigious stage, gain professional recognition, and join a proud tradition of surgical innovation and discovery.
Eligible applicants are encouraged to submit an abstract and be part of this landmark celebration. If you know a colleague whose research deserves wider recognition, consider sharing this opportunity with them.
