W G Norman Research Scholarship

The WG Norman Research Scholarship supports trauma-focused research to be in undertaken in South Australia.

Founded following a bequest from the late Dr W G Norman of Adelaide, the scholarship originally funded advances in surgery on injuries resulting from accident or trauma to young persons and was then broadened to include all trauma-focused research.


  • Policy and guideline

    Recipients are required to:
    - present their research at the annual meeting of the Surgical Research Society of Australasia (or an agreed equivalent) at least once during, or in the 12 months following, the scholarship period.

  • Who can apply?

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to be:
    - a RACS Fellow
    - Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) or
    - SET Trainee
    - enrolled (or intending to enrol) in a higher degree such as a Masters, PhD or the equivalent
    - a resident of South Australia.

  • Activity

    Your research activity needs to be undertaken as part of a higher degree at an approved research institute in South Australia under the supervision of an experienced investigator. Preference is given to research with a trauma focus.

    Unless otherwise negotiated or stipulated in the respective guideline, the commencement date for scholarships is 1 January in the year following application.

  • Application requirements
    Your application is to include:

    - your career and employment details
    - your research proposal and proposed budget 
    - a letter endorsing your research from your supervisor.
  • Selection and awarding

    Selection
    - assessment is via written application with shortlisted applicants invited to interview.
    - the selection panel is comprised of representatives of the ANZ Scholarship and Grant Committee.

    Awarding
    - payment will be made to the administering institution in one instalment prior to 1 March of the scholarship year (upon receipt of a valid tax invoice).
