There is a continual development of new technologies and procedures in healthcare. To plan effectively, decision makers need to assess the potential impact of new developments, and re-evaluate the value of existing services. This process is termed Health Technology Assessment (HTA).
HTA work involves the use of systematic methods to evaluate several key aspects of a health technology:
• Clinical safety, efficacy and effectiveness
• Cost-effectiveness and budgetary impact modelling
• Legal, social, ethical and organisational issues
The synthesis of evidence across these domains acts as the bridge between primary evidence and health policy. 
We are the “go-to” agency for National and International Departments of Health for the assessment of health technologies that support surgical practice. Through this activity RACS has an important role in supporting both the policymaking and decision-making around funding of healthcare services, including surgical services, medical services, medical devices, and diagnostics.
We employ a multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in public health, medical science, biostatistics, health economics and health policy. The R&E ASERNIP-S team comprises of the following members:
