Usage

The use of MALT is mandatory for all SIMGs under clinical assessment.

Supervisors

MALT uses the terms Nominated Supervisor and Alternate Supervisor. MALT Nominated Supervisor is one of the SIMGs current Overseers (FRACS).

MALT Alternate Supervisor is the surgeon in theatre with the SIMG.

The Nominated Supervisor can be changed during the assessment period and is responsible for approving all cases.

Nominated and Alternate Supervisors can login to MALT to view a SIMG logbook at any time, and add comments to cases.

Hospitals

Record cases done in all hospitals (both accredited and unaccredited).

Approval process

Cases move through a workflow progression of "Draft" to "For Review" to "Approved":

  1. Fill in and save the case (Draft).
  2. Once you are satisfied that the case is complete and accurate, refer to Nominated Supervisor (For Review).
  3. Nominated Supervisors are automatically notified of cases awaiting review, in accordance with the email preferences setup on their MALT Account page. Supervisors should review these cases and, where they are satisfied that the case is complete and accurate, approve (Approved).

At the end of each quarter, the Department of SIMG Assessments will generate Logbook Summary Reports (and other custom reports if relevant) for SIMGs in all specialties except General Surgery.

General Surgery SIMGs will need to print the Logbook Summary Report themselves and submit to General Surgeons Australia along with the forms for MOPS, Fellowship Examination Preparation and Sentinel Events.

Procedures

SIMGs are required to log all operative procedures. A case may have multiple procedures.

These logbooks utilise the SNOMED CT-AU reference set with Board Reporting Terms (bolded in MALT) determined by each Specialty Board. See list below for Board Reporting Terms in your specialty.

Cardiothoracic Surgery (XLSX 9.76MB)
General Surgery (XLSX 5.91MB)
Neurosurgery (XLSX 12.42MB)
Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (XLSX 9.79MB)
Orthopaedic Surgery (XLSX 9.68MB)
Paediatric Surgery (XLSX 9.68MB)
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (XLSX 2.8MB)
Urology (XLSX 9.76MB)
Vascular Surgery (XLSX 9.65MB)

The MALT Logbook Summary Report and any other Training Board Reports will show procedure counts for Board Reporting Terms only. Please select the procedure that is the closest description of the procedure you have performed.

If you need asistance you can use the  'Can't Find My Procedure' option on the data entry screen.  A MALT team member will respond with suggestions from the board approved terms.
