Training in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery
The Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery considers that
credentialling in paediatric cardiac surgery can only be achieved
after post-fellowship training.
The Board encourages trainees to rotate through one of the
hospitals offering paediatric cardiac surgery (Royal Children's
Hospital in Melbourne, Westmead Children's Hospital, Royal Perth
Hospital - on rotation to Princess Margaret Hospital and the
Mater Misericordiae Hospital) for six months, preferably in
the second or third year of Cardiothoracic Surgery training.
Should a trainee spend six months in a paediatric cardiac
surgery post, then the criteria for minimal operative experience
may be reduced. The reduction will be determined on a case by case
basis and at the discretion of the Board.
