RACS is proud to support Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day on Friday 5 June 2020. The day aims to encourage conversations about mental health and help reduce the stigma for doctors experiencing mental illness.
We encourage all RACS members to wear crazy socks, share photos on social media with the hashtag #CrazySocks4Docs and start conversations with colleagues about doctors’ health and wellbeing.
Dr Geoff Toogood, a Melbourne Cardiologist and mental health advocate, founded the day in 2017. Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day 2020 will be launched with a virtual panel on doctors’ health hosted by well-known GP Dr Sally Cockburn, 7.40am – 9.00am AEDT on Friday 5 June.
Ruth Bollard, RACS Councillor and Chair of the RACS Wellbeing Working Group, is encouraging the surgical community to support Crazy Socks 4 Doc Day.
“Now more than ever, it is important that we look after ourselves and our colleagues. We can do more to support each other and to normalise conversations about mental health for doctors.”
The Surgeons Wellbeing webpage has resources on how to talk to a colleague you may be concerned about. The RACS Support Program delivered by Converge International is also available to all Fellows, Trainees, International Medical Graduates, Global Health volunteers and our immediate families. The service offers up to four free sessions a year and provides confidential support and counselling for any work or personal issues.
If you or someone you know is experiencing depression you can contact Lifeline on AUS 13 11 14 or NZ 0800 54 33 54, beyondblue on AUS 1300 22 4636.
