Mr Augusto (Gus) Gonzalvo MD, FRACS

Mr Gonzalvo is a neurosurgeon specialising in spinal surgery and skull base surgery. He is one of the very few surgeons in Australia (if not the only one) to have been trained in combined neurosurgery and orthopaedic spinal fellowships in internationally recognised leading centres for more than three years. He also dedicated a year to further research and sub-specialisation on skull base and spinal tumours.
His areas of expertise in the fields of spine and skull base surgery include microsurgery, keyhole surgery and endoscopic surgery. He has been formally trained and is experienced in minimally invasive approaches as well as complex approaches and reconstructing procedures for spinal deformities, fractures and resection of spinal and skull base tumours.
Mr Gonzalvo performs more than 400 procedures every year at Austin Health, Warringal Private Hospital and The Epworth Richmond.
The result of his research has been published in the highest-impact factor journals of his specialty (Spine, Neurosurgery, and Journal of Neurosurgery).
Mr Gonzalvo is the Director of Neurosurgery at Austin Health and Visiting Neurosurgeon at the Northern Hospital (both associated to The University of Melbourne), where he teaches medical students, residents, registrars and fellows.
Mr Gonzalvo also speaks fluent Spanish and he can communicate in Italian.
