Weary Dunlop Boon Pong Exchange Fellowship
The Weary Dunlop Boon Pong Exchange Fellowship provides opportunities for Thai surgeons to undertake clinical attachments in Australian hospitals, in their nominated field of interest.
Up to six Fellowships are awarded annually, each for a period of four months. The Fellowship consists of a stipend and scholars usually receive a travel allowance from their home country.

October 2022
After a long hiatus due to Covid travel restrictions, RACS Global Health would like to welcome Dr Payothorn Decharin, who will be observing at the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery, VIC alongside supervisor Professor Kate Drummond. Dr Decharin is the first Weary Dunlop Boon Pong scholar for 2022 and was selected as a scholarship recipient by the Royal College of Surgeons, Thailand.

The International Scholarships Committee is pleased to announce the arrival of Dr Boonsap Sakboon, a Weary Dunlop Boonpong Fellowship recipient from Lampang, Thailand. The Fellowship program is jointly administered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand and RACS, with up to six Fellowships awarded annually. Boonsap will be undertaking a four-month training attachment in thoracic surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, supervised by RACS Fellows Associate Professor Julie Mundy and Mr Wingchi Lo. Application process
The Weary Dunlop Boon Pong Exchange Fellowship is jointly convened by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand convenes a committee to interview and assess appropriate candidates. The assessment involves a test in English, which is usually a second or third language for the applicants. Successful applicants nominate their field of interest and the Australian Convener seeks to place them in suitable training positions via contact with the heads of surgical departments in Australia. The training is based in hospitals that can offer the experience desired by the Thai scholar. The Fellowship provides opportunities for the recipients to obtain further exposure in general or specialist surgery, gain experience in clinical research and the applications of modern technology, and develop hospital management skills in a multi-disciplinary environment.
The mentor for each scholar is the head of the surgical department concerned. The nature of the training is an apprenticeship, and the scholars are supernumerary to Australian Trainees. Scholars observe and may assist elective operations during the day and emergency operations at night and weekends. Scholars have access to hospital libraries, participate in surgical meetings and surgical audits, and attend appropriate lectures relevant to their interests.
