The Find a Surgeon directory is a listing of active Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons who meet the requirements of the College's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program and have opted to be on the list. This list excludes retired or inactive Fellows.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Selection Initiative

RACS Council has approved the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Initiative policy and the Board of OHNS has implemented this policy.

Successful progression to interview

The Board has set the minimum eligibility criteria for progression to interview as follows:

  • Rank within the top 80% of Structured Referee Report Scores, and
  • Combined Score 45/60 or greater for CV and Structured Referee Report

Minimum Standard for Selection

  • Applicants invited to interview must have a weighted interview score of 28/40 or greater to be considered for appointment.

Structured online curriculum vitae (CV)

CV will score information on, and require documented evidence for:

  • Surgical and medical experience
  • Qualifications (Masters, PhD, FRACS, etc)
  • Publications
  • Presentations (regional, national and international)
  • Skills Courses 

No additional CV information will be accepted from applications.

Structured online referee reports

Applicants must provide current contact details, including a valid e-mail, address for:

  • A minimum of eight (8) and maximum of 12 supervising surgical consultants who had the greatest period of supervision over the applicant for surgical term undertaken in the three (3) clinical years (from 1 January 2015) prior to the closing date of applications
  • At least two (2) referees must come from OHNS rotations
  • No more than two (2) surgical consultants per rotation can be nominated as referees
  • Five (5) non-surgical staff from within the three (3) clinical years (from 1 January 2015) prior to closing date for applications

 Who can qualify as a referee?

  • Referees must be Surgical Consultants at the time of supervision and must be able to comment on all aspects of the applicants' training
  • Other consultants
  • Other Health Professionals
  • If full-time Research, refer to the Selection Regulations

What is the time period in which a referee will be considered valid?

  • Referees must be from within the last three (3)  clinical years

How many referees can be provided from a particular rotation?

  • A maximum of two (2) surgical and two (2) non-surgical referees can be provided from any particular rotation

How are referees selected?

  • The Board will select six (6) supervising consultants to be contacted to provide a referee report.
  • In selecting supervising surgical consultants the Board will endeavour to obtain at least one report from each OHNS term (where applicable).
  • The Board will select four (4) non-surgical staff to be contacted as part of the selection process
  • Reports from supervising consultants for research periods will not be sought unless the applicant is in full-time research

How are the structured online referee reports collected and scored?

  • The applicant must receive four (4) valid reports from surgical consultants and two (2) valid reports from non-surgical staff to be eligible to proceed in the selection process.

Semi-structured interview

Date of interviews: Saturday 23 June 2018
Date invitations to interview sent: no later than 10 business days before the interview day

The interviews for Australian applicants will be held at a single location in Melbourne, Victoria.

The format of the interviews will be as follows:

  • Three (3) interview panels
  • Two (2) interviewers per panel
  • Two (2) scenarios per panel

Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide photo identification.

Announcement of offers

Announcement of offers to successful applicants will be made on 23 July 2018

Feedback to both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be made in accordance with the Selection to Surgical Education and Training Policy.


Notes

1. Rotations must have been completed within the validity period specified. Future rotations must be verifiable.

2. For current SET Trainees, OHNS unit must be completed within 2 years of first application to SET and for applicants in full-time research, within the 2 years prior to commencing research

2. Surgical rotations include those commenced after 1/1/2015 and completed by 31/12/2018.  Surgical rotations include: Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery.  All rotations must be verifiable on hospital letterhead stating duration and rotation type.
