Supervisor Framework

The Supervisor Framework has been developed for RACS Surgical Supervisors to support them and to help clarify the expectations of this important role.

The Supervisor Framework (PDF 2.82MB) has been developed for RACS Surgical Supervisors to support them and to help clarify the expectations of this important role. It is a guide for supervisors that can be used for their own professional development by reflecting on the defined supervision competencies and identifying areas they may like to explore and develop further.

Introduction

The RACS Supervision Framework has five domains:

  1. Professionalism
  2. Educational Management and Leadership
  3. Trainee and Patient Safety
  4. Teaching and Facilitating Learning
  5. Assessment of Learning

For each domain there are competencies associated with high quality supervision and training of RACS Trainees. The Supervisor competencies have been organised into two levels: Core and Aspiring to Excellence.

The Core competencies describe those that all Surgical Supervisors should have, while the Aspiring to Excellence level competencies are those that ideally develop over time.

1. Professionalism

1.1 Models professional and ethical standards regarding Trainee education and training

1.2 Develops professional educational expertise

2. Educational Management and Leadership

2.1 Implements high quality evidence based educational standards

2.2 Liases with professional educational organisations

2.3 Facilitates a team approach to teaching

3. Trainee and Patient Safety

3.1 Maintains patient safety and high quality care whilst facilitating Trainee learning

3.2 Facilitates personal health and wellbeing of the Trainee

4. Teaches and Facilitates Learning

4.1 Establishes and maintains a safe and supportive environment for learning

4.2 Promotes learning through teaching

5. Assessment of Learning

5.1 Monitors learning through assessment and feedback

5.2 Manages underperformance

Resources to assist Supervisors to implement the framework

Mapping document - This document has been developed to assist Supervisors to identify resources to help them in developing the competencies within the Supervisor Framework.  This document can be used in conjunction with the Supervisor Framework Self-Assessment Form. Some of the Professional Development courses are offered both face to face and online and this is indicated in the table.

Self Assessment Form - The following form has been created to help supervisors to self assess against each of the Competencies in the Supervisor Framework. The form is for personal use only, but can be used to inform your CPD learning plan and to identify areas that you may like to explore. Each competency is colour coded according to Core (orange) and Aspiring to Excellence (green). Click next to the competency and a drop down box will give you three options: Achieved (if you feel you have already achieved this competency), Partially Achieved (if you think you are working towards achieving the competency but still need to work on it) and Not achieved (for those competencies you think you need to consider professional development to achieve). You may also like to record personal reflections on the right including evidence of achievement towards a competency.
