Prior to state and federal elections, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons provides an opportunity for political parties to outline policy positions on key issues relating to the delivery of surgical services by providing a document outlining the areas of specific concern and relevance to the Fellows, Trainees and International Medical Graduates of South Australia in the lead-up to the forthcoming state election. RACS then distributes the responses to its membership and the broader community.

RACS believes that considered and informed policy positions will allow the South Australian Region of the College to advocate effectively to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

RACS has identified seven key focus areas relevant to the 2018 South Australian election:

  1. Delivery of Surgical Services across the local health networks
  2. Clinician engagement
  3. Teaching, training and research
  4. Surgical technology
  5. South Australian Audit of Surgical Mortality
  6. Alcohol related harm
  7. Recognition of paid parental leave entitlements and diversification of surgical workforce
