Mr Andrew Gauden
Overview
Mr Andrew Gauden is a Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon whose clinical focus is the surgical and neurointerventional treatment of cerebrovascular disorders. He holds appointments with both the Departments of Neurosurgery and Imaging (Radiology) at Monash Health. As a dual-trained neurosurgeon and neurointerventionalist, he specialises in treating brain aneurysms (using both open and minimally-invasive techniques), moyamoya disease, brain and spinal arteriovenous and other vascular malformations, as well as stroke and cerebrovascular fluid-venous disorders. In addition to his special interest in cerebrovascular disease, Mr Gauden offers a wide range of general neurosurgical services. He also offers vertebroplasty in osteoporotic and pathological vertebral body fractures and percutaneous sclerotherapy for veno-lymphatic malformations.
Mr Gauden obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) with First Class Honours at the University of Tasmania in 2008. He has subsequently trained with world-class neurosurgeons across Australia and New Zealand, as well as the United States of America. His clinical practice has a strong academic focus and commitment to research. Mr Gauden was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Macquarie University in 2017, having developed a world-first successful treatment for arteriovenous malformations with the combined treatment of stereotactic radiosurgery and vascular targeting. He has since received awards for this research from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia.
He has completed additional prestigious post-fellowship training in Cerebrovascular Surgery at Stanford University, California, USA, under the supervision of Prof Gary Steinberg, Department of Neurosurgery. Mr Gauden gained extensive experience in the conduct of cerebral bypass surgery with Stanford University performing some of the highest numbers of such procedures globally. His neurosurgical fellowship was followed by a fellowship in Neurointerventional Radiology under the direction of Prof Jeremy Heit, Chief of Neuroimaging and Neurointervention also at Stanford University.
Among his other academic achievements, Mr Gauden has furthered his interest in ancient civilisations by completing a Masters of Arts with Distinction (Ancient History) at the University of Wales, Trinity St David.
Mr Gauden is an academic neurosurgeon, he is committed to progressing research addressing the genetic, developmental and pathophysiological basis of cerebrovascular disease and its management. His current research focus lies in the area of moyamoya disease and revascularisation procedures (cerebral bypass surgery), as well as arteriovenous shunting vascular malformations and in cerebrospinal fluid-venous disorders, such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension and cerebrospinal fluid-venous fistulae.
He consults at Monash Medical Centre, Monash Specialist Centre, Clayton and Frankston.
