Dr David 'Dave' Kitchen
Overview
Dr David Kitchen is an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty expertise in hip and knee arthroplasty, including complex primary and revision joint replacement, cartilage restoration, and lower limb sports injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament and meniscal pathology. His clinical practice is grounded in a comprehensive approach to joint preservation and reconstruction, with a focus on optimising functional outcomes and patient quality of life.
He completed advanced subspecialty fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, the United Kingdom’s top ranked tertiary orthopaedic centre, where he developed extensive experience in complex hip and knee arthroplasty, revision surgery, and joint preservation techniques. He has also undertaken visiting fellowships across Europe, including in Switzerland, Germany, and France, enabling exposure to diverse surgical approaches and contemporary international best practice.
Dr Kitchen holds a PhD from Adelaide University and has an established academic portfolio, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. His research reflects a strong commitment to evidence-based practice and the advancement of orthopaedic care, particularly in the domains of arthroplasty outcomes and musculoskeletal trauma.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr Kitchen is actively engaged in medical education and training. He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and serves as the lead for musculoskeletal education within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN), where he oversees and delivers structured teaching programmes for medical students. He is also an orthopaedic (AOA) trainee supervisor within NALHN, contributing to the training and mentorship of junior doctors and surgical trainees, with an emphasis on developing clinical competence, surgical skills, and professional standards.
Dr Kitchen holds public hospital appointments at Lyell McEwin and Modbury Hospitals, where he manages a broad spectrum of orthopaedic conditions, including complex trauma and elective arthroplasty cases. His surgical practice incorporates advanced technologies such as robotic-assisted joint replacement, anterior approach total hip arthroplasty, and patient-specific instrumentation, facilitating precision and individualised care.
He is committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care, with a focus on alleviating pain, restoring mobility, and enabling patients to return to work, sport, and daily activities with confidence.
