Dr Nicolás Oddone-Baridon
MBBS, MS(Endocrine), MMed(Criticalcare) MD FRACS
Is a general surgeon who has been in practice for over 20 years.
Nicolás originally trained in Liver surgery completing two years of postgraduate fellowship in his original Uruguay and another year at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide under the tutelage of Guy Maddern in 2006.
An avid outdoorsman he decided this lifestyle was not for him. Having a career change he completed two years of postgraduate fellowship training at the Princess Mary Cancer centre at Westmead Hospital from 2007 to 2008. He gained expertise in Surgical Oncology including comprehensive management of skin cancers, including melanoma and sarcomas. He also trained in head and neck surgery performing over two hundred neck dissections for head and neck malignancies. As well as over 400 thyroidectomies over these period.
In 2016 he moved to the northern rivers after falling in love with the beautiful nature, basing his practice in Grafton where he practices general surgery maintaining his interest in surgical oncology, skin cancers, melanomas thyroid, parathyroid and salivary gland surgery.
His arrival to Grafton brought sentinel lymph node biopsies for melanoma, thyroid, parathyroid and salivary gland surgery as well as laparoscopic hernia surgery. These procedures are now performed regularly by all surgeons in Grafton. Nicolás is the head of the general surgery department at Grafton Base Hospital. He is heavily involved in health care advocacy, professional standards and the new hospital planning for Grafton.
Nicolas is an avid student and is passionate about medicine as a whole. He has a Master of Surgery(Sydney Uni 2015) and in 2023 was awarded a Master of Medicine in Critical Care(Sydney Uni 2023). His master of surgery thesis explored the viability of transoral thyroidectomy in 2014. He performed the first MIVAT(minimally invasive video assisted thyroidectomy) at Macquarie University Hospital in 2013 after training in Pisa, Italy under Paolo Miccoli.
Nicolás can be seen every morning cycling or running or rowing in the beautiful Clarence Valley. He speaks fluent Spanish, Italian and German. He provides Telehealth consultations and operates public patients at Grafton Base Hospital and privately at Baringa Private Hospital.
