Born in South Africa, Dr Sabin Warner-Smith spent much of his childhood in the United States before moving to Australia for high school, where he has lived ever since.

Dr Warner-Smith holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Tasmania and a Master of Surgery from the University of Sydney. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2023.

After medical school, Dr Warner-Smith and his wife moved to North Queensland for his medical residency and quickly fell in love with the region. He completed much of his surgical training in Townsville and Cairns, with additional training in trauma and transplant surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Committed to surgical education, Dr Warner-Smith holds appointments as Adjunct Lecturer in Surgery at both the University of Queensland and James Cook University. His research has been published in surgical journals, including the ANZ Journal of Surgery, and presented at national and international conferences. He also serves as an interviewer for General Surgical Training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Dr Warner-Smith offers a broad range of general surgical procedures in Cairns. His particular interests include bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, and minimally invasive hernia repair, including laparoscopic repair of rectus divarication. He works closely with his patients to understand their concerns, explain their options and develop a treatment plan suited to their individual needs.

Dr Warner-Smith has a strong interest in helping patients achieve sustainable weight loss and improve their health through bariatric surgery. He recognises that surgery is one part of a broader journey, with ongoing support, lifestyle changes and attention to physical and emotional wellbeing all contributing to long-term outcomes.

His approach is grounded in empathy, respect and open communication. By building a supportive partnership with each patient, Dr Warner-Smith aims to help them make informed decisions, feel confident in their care and work towards lasting improvements in their health and quality of life.
