Dr Kapil Sethi
Overview
Kapil Sethi is a FRACS and Melbourne-trained Urologist, with recognised subspecialty expertise in Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), laser prostate surgery, and the surgical management of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). He is a highly experienced HoLEP surgeon and has established several tertiary hospital HoLEP services, in addition to performing other minimally invasive BPH surgery in private hospitals across the city. Kapil’s practice also covers the treatment of benign and malignant kidney, prostate, and bladder conditions, using advanced keyhole and robotic techniques.
Kapil completed his schooling in the UK and graduated in Medicine from New South Wales in 2003. He moved to Melbourne for surgical training and was awarded a Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Melbourne in 2015 for his research in kidney cancer. Following specialist Urology training, he completed a fellowship year at the Austin Hospital before undertaking further international subspecialty training.
In Germany, Kapil became the first Australasian-trained fellow at the world-renowned Martini Klinik in Hamburg – the leading global centre for prostate cancer surgery. He also worked in a highly specialised minimally invasive urology department, gaining extensive expertise in laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and complex endourological procedures such as keyhole stone surgery. In the UK, he completed an advanced laparoscopy and robotic fellowship at the acclaimed Stepping Hill Hospital, Manchester, further refining his skills in robotic kidney and pelvic surgery, as well as laser-assisted BPH surgery.
Kapil offers the full spectrum of modern BPH treatments – including HoLEP, Rezum, Urolift and other minimally invasive options – tailoring each procedure to the patient’s prostate anatomy, symptoms, and lifestyle needs. His high surgical volumes and outcomes reflect international best practice, and he is actively involved in training urology registrars in laser prostatectomy techniques.
A committed researcher and educator, Kapil has received the Villis Marshall Prize for best scientific research from the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ) and the Austin Prize in Surgery. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, presented at international conferences, and serves as a reviewer for several international medical journals.
Kapil holds appointments at St Vincent’s Health and Austin Health and operates privately at Epworth Freemasons, St Vincent’s Private and Healthscope hospitals. He is dedicated to delivering world-class HoLEP and BPH surgery in Melbourne, offering personalised, patient-centred care in an approachable and fully informed setting.
