Dr Matthew Marino

Overview

Dr Matt Marino is a Melbourne based colorectal and general surgeon with a passion for delivering patient-focused care. His practice combines modern surgical expertise with a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring every patient feels supported and respected. His areas of clinical interest include anal cancer screening with high-resolution anoscopy, bowel cancer, proctology including sphincter-sparing management of anal fistulas, endoscopy/colonoscopy, benign colorectal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders, and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery. He also performs general surgery procedures including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hernia surgery.

Matt completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science before graduating with First Class Honours in Medicine and Surgery. He undertook general surgery training in Queensland and Melbourne, completing his fellowship at the Austin Hospital with additional rotations across rural Victoria and Tasmania. He subsequently completed subspecialty colorectal fellowships at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals, and Leeds University Hospital. His areas of clinical interest include bowel cancer, proctology, endoscopy/colonoscopy, benign colorectal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders, and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery. He also performs general surgery procedures including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hernia surgery.

Matt is trained in high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) and provides anal cancer screening for patients at risk. He is a provisional member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) and member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS).

He maintains a research interest in the effects of colorectal surgery on the wellbeing of gay and bisexual men and this is the focus of a PhD which he is undertaking. Matt is also a reviewer for the journal Colorectal Disease.

Dr Marino holds public appointments at Austin Hospital and Grampians Health (Horsham Hospital). Privately, he currently consults in the Eastern and Northern suburbs of Melbourne, and operates out of Epworth and Northern Private Hospitals.
