Dr Michael Byrom

Overview

Welcome. I am a modern innovative Cardiothoracic Surgeon with training and experience in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom. I am experienced in a wide range of adult cardiothoracic surgery including coronary artery bypass, aortic surgery, heart valve repair / replacement, lung biopsy, pleurodesis for pneumothorax or effusion, and lung cancer resection via minimal access incision.

I have a particular focus on performing surgery at the lowest risk to the patient, with proven low mortality despite often elderly and high-risk patients. My experience in patient safety is unmatched including:

* Introduced real-time mortality monitoring for cardiac surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

* Surgeon champion for NSQIP at Sydney Local Health District

* Part of the Clinical Excellence Commission group that wrote the Morbidity & Mortality guidelines for New South Wales

* Wrote and teach the Quality Assurance component of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons CLEAR course

Lung cancer resection patients are scheduled for surgery within 30 days of appointment, other public patients also can generally be scheduled within 1 month of appointment, and there is no wait for private patients. I operate at University Hospital Geelong (public) and St John of God Hospital Geelong (private).
