Dr Ross Fowler
Dr Ross Fowler is a consultant Urological Surgeon with sub-specialty fellowship training in robotic, laparoscopic and open management of prostate, kidney and bladder cancer. He is also highly skilled in minimally invasive management and prevention of complex urinary stone disease using techniques such as Supine PCNL and Endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS). Ross takes a friendly approach to his care; he enjoys getting to know his patients, helping them understand their urological condition and making them feel as comfortable as possible.
After graduating from the University of Queensland School of Medicine in 2009, Ross completed his advanced surgical training in Urology and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ). He then undertook an additional one year international fellowship in robotic and laparoscopic urological oncology in the UK at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, one of only a few prestigious centers accredited by the European Robotic Urology Section (ERUS) for training robotic surgeons. During his time there he gained extensive experience in the surgical management of prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. He performed minimally invasive techniques using the Da Vinci robot including the novel “Retzius sparing prostatectomy” for improved early return of urinary continence. He also trained in robotic cystectomy, partial nephrectomy and reconstruction. As part of his oncology training, he also performed single stage low-dose rate Brachytherapy seed insertion for specific prostate cancer patients.
In addition to urological oncology, Ross is happy to consult on general urological conditions including bladder and voiding dysfunction and benign prostate enlargement for which he can offer minimally invasive surgical options.
Ross has held multiple leadership and education positions during his career and is heavily involved in training medical students, junior doctors and specialist training urologists. He was the former chair of the Urology Trainee Forum and the National Representative for Trainees on the Board of Urology USANZ, and sat on the hospital accreditation sub-committee. He was the urology representative at the Royal Australasian College of Surgical Trainees (RACSTA), the peak body for specialist surgical trainees and also volunteers teaching to specialist medical student craft groups. He holds a senior lecturer role at the University of Queensland.
He holds public appointments as a Staff Specialist at the QE II Jubilee Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital.
He is the Co-Director of Total Care Urology and has private appointments at the Wesley Hospital, St Andrews War Memorial Hospital, St Andrews Private Hospital Ipswich and Greenslopes Private Hospital.
