Associate Professor Simon Tsao

Overview

As an Australia-trained Breast (Oncoplasty), Endocrine, and General Surgeon, Associate Professor Tsao has years of surgical experience. He works in both Public (Austin Health) and Private (Western, Warringal & Epworth Private) hospitals, therefore he offers a selection of options to patients for their treatment.

He was trained at the Royal Melbourne and The Alfred Hospital as a General Surgeon, before completing 2 years of subspecialist Breast and Endocrine training at St. Vincent's Hospital with the BreastSurgANZ post-fellowship training program. He subsequently completed the prestigious Oncoplastic Breast and Endocrine fellowship at St. George's Hospital in London. A/Prof Tsao is fluent in Mandarin and happy to conduct consultations in Chinese.

Breast (Oncoplastic) Surgery

A/Prof Tsao specialises in breast surgery with favourable cosmetic outcomes. During his advanced oncoplastic training in London, he mastered a wide range of oncoplastic techniques for strong aesthetic outcomes with effective cancer management. Surgeons with advanced oncoplastic skills have significantly lower mastectomy rate and higher patient satisfaction.

Breast Reduction, Top Surgery and other Functional Breast Surgeries

A/Prof Tsao performs breast reduction, mastopexy (breast lift), female to male mastectomy (Top Surgery) and aesthetic corrections following previous breast surgery.  A/Prof Tsao is skilled in implant reconstruction and collaborates with plastic surgeons to perform autologous reconstruction. In addition, A/Prof Tsao also manages all benign breast conditions, including benign breast lumps, mastalgia, abnormal nipple discharge, and gynaecomastia.

Endocrine Surgery

A/Prof Tsao's expertise extends to treating thyroid and parathyroid diseases, with a focus on minimally invasive surgery and ensuring surgical treatment only when it is absolutely required. 

Laparoscopic General Surgery & Endoscopy

As a general surgeon by training, A/Prof Tsao provides treatment for all common general surgical problems including hernias, gallbladder, appendix, toenails, carpal tunnel, and haemorrhoids. A/Prof Tsao is also GESA accredited for gastroscopy and colonoscopy. 

Cancer Research

Beyond his clinical practice, A/Prof Tsao is actively involved in cancer research and has published several high-impact publications. He supervises several post-doctoral scientists and PhD students. His research focuses on understanding the genetic and biological basis of cancer and developing new treatments to help patients. By engaging with the latest cancer research, he will be able to offer up to date treatment options to his patients.
